The Science

THE SCIENCE

The skin-ny on dog skin 🐩

From our skin nerd POV, it's not enough that you trust our products work. We want you understand why and how they work. You deserve it (and plus the science is super cool).

But first, a bit of dog skin biology 101:

Dog skin is a lot like our skin. It is the largest organ in your dog, accounting for 12-24% of their weight (especially in young dogs). Even hidden under fur or hair, dog skin is affected by many things, including the environment. It is a vital barrier to keep bad stuff out (like pollutants and allergens) and good stuff in (water, vitamins, proteins) (Miller et al. 1). Additionally, because paw pads are constantly in friction with the ground, its important to keep their skin barrier strong, or it can open the door to potential irritants.

Without regular care, environmental factors, diet, bacteria, and even breed predispositions can weaken the skin barrier, leading to allergies, poor coat health, and frequent vet visits (a top 5 reason for dog checkups) (“Top 10 Reasons”).

Dog skin also changes with age (sound familiar?). With each birthday, their skin becomes thinner, drier, and more fragile, making proper care even more essential.

Fur: A Coat of Many Functions

A dog’s fur is more than just soft and beautiful—it’s their natural defense system. It regulates temperature, repels dirt, and protects against sun, rain, and injury. Each breed has a unique coat type, from double layers to wiry strands, requiring tailored care to prevent matting, shedding, and skin issues. Proper grooming keeps their coat healthy and their skin happy.

Eyes: Windows to Their World

A dog’s eyes are uniquely adapted for keen motion detection and low-light vision, helping them navigate their surroundings and express emotion. With their wide field of view and reflective tapetum layer for night vision, their eyes are a marvel of nature. Regular care, like gentle cleaning and monitoring for redness or cloudiness, ensures their vision stays sharp and protects against common issues like dryness or infections. Healthy eyes mean a happy, alert companion.

Paws: Nature’s All-Terrain Pads

A dog’s paws are their ultimate tools for adventure—designed to protect, grip, and endure all surfaces, from rough trails to hot pavement. These pads are thick yet sensitive, packed with nerves that provide essential feedback about the environment. Regular care, like cleaning and moisturizing, prevents cracks, infections, and discomfort, ensuring your dog stays ready for every journey.

Fascinating facts about your dog’s skin 🤓

🧫 Higher pH
Remember pH from chemistry class? pH stands for "potential of hydrogen" and it really just measures how acidic or alkaline something is. pH is a key factor affecting skin barrier health. Healthy human skin has a slightly acidic pH of 4.1 to 5.8, which helps protect against bacteria and environmental factors (Proksch 1045). Dog skin, however, ranges from 5.5 to 7.2, depending on body part, age, and breed (Matousek et al. 56).
🔬 Thinner Skin
Dogs generally have thinner skin than humans, making them more sensitive to criticism. Just kidding. It can make their skin prone to sensitivity. And like humans, a dog's skin thins with age, which can increase dryness, sensitivity, and slower healing. Maintaining a strong skin barrier is essential, especially for senior dogs.
🧬 Faster Cell Turnover
Cellular turnover is a normal skin process, where dead surface skin cells shed to make way for new cells below. Dogs, like humans, shed their skin cells, but do it 20% faster (Vetwest). Bacteria thrive on dead skin cells, potentially leading to sensitivity, infections, and odor. Natural accumulation of bacteria and yeast is part of what makes for "frito feet". Regular paw cleansing helps control unwanted bacteria and reinforce the skin barrier to help prevent irritation.
