We describe “underdogs” as the dogs often overlooked for adoption and care because of their senior age (+7 years), medical status, special needs, and/or hospice requirements.
As an example, fewer than 1 in 4 senior dogs ultimately find their forever home and 2/3 less likely to be adopted as their younger canine counterparts (ASPCA). We can only imagine the statistics for dogs who have special needs or hospice.
Given the adoption challenges and the larger resources required to support these “underdogs” (money, time, and heart), many shelters and rescues are reluctant to welcome them in. Yet when you learn their stories, these dogs are anything but “underdogs” (which is why we use the word in quotes 😉).
These dogs aren’t the only one with stories. In addition to these “underdogs”, there is also community of small rescues and sanctuaries who devote their lives to these special canines. Most of us never hear about these underfunded organizations, many who scrape by on limited donations. Yet, every day, caretakers and volunteers from these organizations humbly and quietly rescue seniors and special needs dogs or offer a forever foster home or sanctuary to a hospice dog so their last memories of life are not a loud shelter, but instead a cozy dog bed, with medical care, a full belly, and all the cuddles they want.
We want to celebrate and spotlight these humans too!
To fulfill our mission of serving these “underdogs” and the people that humbly support and cherish them, we donate 100% of all net profits to small rescues and organizations committed to placing and/or caring for dogs.
